Decoration of plastic materials

â–  Today, improving perceived quality has become a priority. Cost reduction, and the decoration of visible parts is all the rage: manufacturing processes have to be standardised while products have to be made to stand out.

Design departments, designers and suppliers now have to double their vigilance and imagination to satisfy consumers by proposing new decors; tactile, olfactory and colourful sensations, sensual or rustic contact and more oneiric evocations. Traditional decoration processes have been shaken with the arrival of more and more inventive and reliable new technologies, gradually moving from flat to 3D and holographic and interferential effects.

After detailing the different mechanisms for perceiving shapes and colours, the survey describes the major families of decorative techniques and processes, supplying information on what has been achieved in many sectors. The different existing techniques are detailed: superficial modification, physical treatments, the creation of optical and visual effects, organic coatings, and the application of images (Cubic 3D, 3D Sublimation). It includes an overview of the advantages and limits of each solution.
