Nano-materials

â–  The exceptional properties of nano-materials are arousing the interest of industrial players on the lookout for promising applications. For several years, R&D; investments have been multiplying and we can already see several applications, notably in industrial sectors where metallic materials, composites and coatings are used in harsh environments: aeronautics, defence, energy, automobile. The astonishing properties of these new materials are also of interest to the chemical industry (new catalysts), the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries (controlled release), the building sector (intelligent glass), and the electronics and opto-electronics sectors. Their magnetic properties and their resistance to corrosion and wear make them excellent candidates in a number of sectors. Materials of the future, nano-materials are already used in some 400 companies, which share a market worth around 6 billion French francs and which should reach 30 billion by 2001.

This survey presents a thorough state of the art review of nano-materials, describing their existing and future manufacturing processes. The different physical and chemical properties are detailed, along with possible geometries. Current and potential applications are reviewed, with special attention paid to applications of structural materials, magnetic materials, storage materials, catalysts and electro-catalysts. A directory of the main players (suppliers, laboratories and experts) and information sources in the field complete the survey, which is a precious tool for industrial firms wanting to get the most from this technological development.
